Perspectives - 5 ways Scream is Postmodern
Fig. 1 Scream - (1996) |
- Scream is very self aware of it's set up, characters have knowledge of current day slasher movies and even make fun of the stereotypes that are within a slasher movie setting, such as Ghost face when he tells Casey 'You should never say who's there it's a death wish, don't you watch scary moives?' and later on in the Movie when Randy talks about the 3 rules on 'Surviving a horror movie'.
- Scream imitates Slasher movies, commonly Halloween with Ghostface's mask similar to Michael Myers, another example is when Randy is watching Halloween telling the characters to turn around while at the same time Ghostface is approaching Randy behind him.
- Slasher movies that Scream is imitating are also visually referenced as characters are even seen watching Halloween, especially at the beginning of the movie when the girl has to answer questions regarding to Halloween to save her Boyfriend from being killed.
- At the beginning, Scream makes itself seem like any other Slasher movie before it becomes completely self aware, Casey who at first seems like our protagonist for the story is immediately killed off after leading us to believe she was our protagonist and pulled a Psycho convention on us revealing she was only a token character to start the Movie's plot.
- Another well known Slasher movie convention is the Killer is almost immortal, while the victims run away the killer is always walking very slow and calm towards the victim, but with scream Ghostface is almsot getting beaten up by all of his victims before overpowering them, which adds a bit of reality to the Scream's Universe.
