Perspectives - 5 ways Moulin Rouge is Postmodern
Figure 1. Moulin Rouge (2001) |
- Moulin Rouge is very Pastiche in terms of it's visual style as it forms a theartre play at the beginning of the movie and becomes more hyper real in terms of colours and how it world looks.
- The movie also includes a mashup of many well known songs from artists of it's time such as, David Bowie, Christina Aguilera, Nirvana, Madonna and many more.
- It exhibits a non-linear story line by setting up the story a year after it's ending and christian narrating to us the events that have already happened, so we already know what's happened but now how it's played out.
- The narrative takes us outside of the story at points to show us the reality and process of christian at his typewriter, gradually his world is lightening up the closer he comes to finishing the story.
- The editing is quick but manages to harmonise with the mood and music of the movie and even with Christians narrating, a good example is during 'El Tango de Roxane' which shows multiple shots of Satine's, Christians and The Unconscious Argentinean's situation altogether and it doesn't fall out of time with the music.
