Perspective - 5 Ways Funny Games is Postermodern
|
Funny Games (2007) |
- Within the movie we can clearly see aspects of the forth wall being broken such as Paul's character acknowledging the camera behind him
- Some scenes are drawn out for too long for intended suspense but there is really no threat at the time, a good example is when Ann breaking free from being tied up, for awhile she struggles to stand and then she has to try and break free which both take her time to do and makes the scene seem longer.
- In common Horror movies there is at least a little bit of satisfaction when we see a character survive or overcome the attack, but with Funny Games there is no good outcome, instead there is a pattern of the same thing over and over again with no survivors. When Ann and her family arrive in the beginning, we see Paul and Peter with Ann's neighbours and later on in the movie Ann is in the same position as her neighbours were, introducing Paul as a family friend.
- Whenever any sort of attack or threat happens, it happens off screen or the camera is directed at another characters reaction/action. Before Georgie is shot the camera follows Paul into the kitchen to watch him make a sandwich and we only hear Georgie being shot while the camera is still on Paul.
- Another unsettling thing about the movie is there is not musical score, usually movies have a score to set the movie's tone or theme but Funny Games removes that to have a realistic setting.
